Diastasis Recti & Pregnancy - Restore Your Core

Diastasis recti or diastasis of the abdomen is the partial or total separation of the lower abdominal muscles that connect at the midsection of the abdomen. Diastasis sect has many symptoms and is a serious condition but its symptoms can be successfully managed with simple exercises. If you experience the pain of diastasis recti, it is important to consult with your doctor right away so the condition can be treated accordingly.

Diastasis rents usually manifests as a lump or dimple in the abdominal muscles that are often seen in the area of the navel. The presence of the lump can be quite embarrassing especially for pregnant women. This condition can also result to the development of lumps and creases on the abdominal wall as well. Diastasis rectus in both men and women does not cause life-threatening symptoms, but it may make daily living more difficult.

There are several causes of abdominal separation including pregnancy, obesity, pregnancy-induced weight gain, lack of physical activity and poor eating habits. It is important to note that diastasis rectus is often linked to obesity since abdominal fat accumulates on the abdominal walls over time. If one is pregnant, there are a lot of complications that could occur during pregnancy. Some of these complications are complications due to the growing placenta, the increased pressure on the abdominal organs and complications caused by hormonal changes that can lead to the formation of lumps and creases.

For diastasis recti during pregnancy, the best solution is to avoid eating spicy and fatty food as these foods may aggravate the condition. Instead, eat foods such as raw fruits and vegetables, leafy green salads, boiled eggs, lean meats and low-fat dairy products. Avoid fats such as butter, oils, margarine and mayonnaise.

Exercise is highly recommended for diastasis recti during pregnancy, since it is one of the main causes of abdominal muscle separation. To begin, it is important to do abdominal stretches regularly. Stretching exercises are effective for relieving abdominal tension and helps to strengthen the abdominal muscles. These stretches can help strengthen the abdominal wall and reduce the tendency for muscle separation in the abdominal region. To increase flexibility, it is important to perform stretching exercises such as abdominal sit-ups and crunches. Other exercises that are good for pregnant women include abdominal exercises and walking.

To prevent this condition from developing, it is important to avoid lifting heavy objects such as books or newspapers which can stress the abdominal muscles contractions. Also, avoid sitting down too much because this may push up on the abdomen and exacerbate the condition.
